125 years of service
Since 1901, ISS has been driven by a clear purpose: delivering exceptional workplace environments through dedicated, empowered people. This people-centric philosophy underpins People-First FM, our integrated facilities management approach in the UK that prioritises the wellbeing, engagement, and performance of every individual who works in or visits the spaces we manage.
The ISS story began in Copenhagen with a small team of night-watchmen providing security services. What started as basic protection services quickly evolved. Under the long-term leadership of C.L. David, the company expanded into cleaning and broader workplace support services. By 1934, it had formalised as the International Service System and continued steady growth across Scandinavia and Europe.
Growth and expansion
Post-war expansion accelerated through organic development and targeted acquisitions. ISS first entered the UK market in 1966 and has been delivering facilities services across Britain ever since. The business moved into new markets, broadened its service range, and built a reputation for reliable, high-quality delivery. In 1977, ISS listed on the stock exchange, and over the following decades it grew into a truly global organisation. Today, ISS operates in more than 30 countries, employs over 325,000 people worldwide, and supports more than 40,000 customers.

People-First FM represents the natural evolution of this heritage. Rather than simply delivering services, we focus on the human experience within each workplace.
