Earth Hour 2018: 20:30pm - 21:30pm, Saturday 24th March 2018

At ISS, we are focusing on the Sustainable Service Performance pillar within our ThinkForward@ISS strategy and championing key environmental events such as Earth Hour 2018
Leading up to Earth Hour, we have been encouraging our employees to get involved this weekend.

Right now we’re up against the biggest environmental threats that our generation, or any generation, has ever faced. Ecosystems, populations and a way of life we love and have become accustomed to, is now at risk from the effects of climate change; rising sea levels, air pollution and over-consumption to state a few.

The figures (provided by WWF UK) are astonishing:

• 40% of the world’s population live within 100km of the coast and over 600 million are directly at risk from rising sea levels
• 80% of freshwater species have declined
• 40% of our forests have disappeared to agricultural land
• 1 in 6 of the planet’s species are at risk of extinction from climate change – just this week, we lost the last surviving male northern white rhino, Sudan

At ISS we are already working hard to protect our planet. Our ThinkForward@ISS ambitions are helping us achieve 100% procurement of our electricity from renewable sources. We are also purchasing more green and efficient products and tackling the small volume of waste created by us from our services. However, we can do more...

Earth Hour, between 20:30 and 21:30 this Saturday 24th March, provides us with a simple but brilliant opportunity to show that as a business we are committed to protecting the planet and reducing our carbon emissions. This is why Earth Hour is fast becoming one of the largest global events in ISS’s calendar. Through Earth Hour we aim to and make a difference.

Last week it was fantastic to receive an email from the WWF UK thanking us for our promotion of the Earth Hour event and our participation this weekend!

I cannot think of any better recognition for our efforts than from the UK event organisers themselves. It was great to see the WWF so interested in how we intend to undertake the challenge.

By participating in Earth Hour we are showing that our UK business is committed to our ThinkForward@ISS ambitions and reducing our carbon emissions.
