International Men's Day

ISS employees encouraged to celebrate male role models for International Men’s Day

The campaign, which is observed in over 60 countries on Sunday 19th November, also asks us to focus on issues which affect men and boys.

Stephanie Hamilton, Director of People and Culture, ISS UK and Ireland, shares her thoughts on International Men’s Day:

International Men’s Day was created to celebrate the positive contribution men bring to society and at a time when there are a number of negative male role models, particularly highlighted in recent press events, it is good to shine a light on the positive role models that exist and celebrate this day with them.

SH-combined-imagesTo celebrate International Men’s Day, we encourage everyone at ISS and beyond to say thank you and maybe do something fun and celebratory by making contact and celebrating the person who has been a male role model in their life, or, like me, my little inspirations, rather than role models; my nephews and brother who bring a constant sense of pride and amusement to me.

I shall celebrate them and encourage them to talk to me about the life choices they make and I know that we will have a lot of fun as I explain it is ‘International Men’s Day’ to them.

I am encouraging everyone at ISS to celebrate International Men’s Day, today at work, rather than wait until Sunday - to seek out the person who has inspired and supported them, celebrate and thank them.

Marking ‘international days of recognition’ can sometimes raise questions around the worthiness of such causes or what the focus is, but actually they are worthy because they highlight certain issues or people that we may take for granted. They remind us to reflect and appreciate the subject for that day.

The international organisers of this day, have chosen the theme ‘how we can give men and boys better life choices’, acknowledging the difficulties faced by some males within our society, such as:

  • The high male suicide rate
  • The challenges faced by boys and men at all stages of education, including attainment
  • Men’s health, such as shorter life expectancy and workplace deaths
  • The challenges faced by the most marginalised men and boys in society (for instance, homeless men, boys in care and the high rate of male deaths in custody)
  • Male victims of violence, including sexual violence
  • The challenges faced by men as parents, particularly new fathers and separated fathers
  • Male victims and survivors of sexual abuse, rape, sexual exploitation, domestic abuse, forced marriage, honour-based crime, stalking and slavery
  • The negative portrayal of men, boys and fathers

I hope that ISS employees reading this never need the support we can provide for the issues highlighted, but we can support them if they do.

If you are an ISS employee who needs help with any of the issues talked about here, please do not hesitate to contact me. Please email me directly in complete confidence: GreatPeople@uk.issworld.com

If you need our help, maybe International Men’s Day will be the catalyst for you reaching out?

To all the men at ISS, I wish you a fantastic International Men’s Day and thank you for the positive contribution you make to our culture and the ISS business.

Stephanie
